Family Activity: Discovering Judaism, the Jewish Seder
Passover is a Jewish festival which celebrates liberation from slavery. The Seder is a symbolic
meal during the festival. The symbols used include matzoh, bitter herbs, salt water, the
paschal lamb, and parsley. They represent the conditions of slavery and the events leading to the deliverance of the Jews from Egypt as recounted in the Old Testament. The aim of the Seder is to make the participants understand that they are a part of the Jewish People and that this history and redemption applies to them.

Family Activity: Discovering Judaism, The Torah
In its narrowest sense, the Torah consists of the first five books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. In the broadest meaning of the word, the Torah is the entire body of Jewish law and teachings. The Jewish scriptures (the written Torah) are hand-
written on parchment scrolls and kept in a large cabinet called an “ark.” These scrolls are holy and out of reverence are not to be touched. Readers follow the text with a Yad, a pointer often in the shape of a hand.
