This year, fifth graders are asked to link their growing ability to think abstractly with the meaning of the sacraments as signs of God's love. Their innate concern for fairness helps them to understand that God's love for all means that work for justice and peace is vital. Because they are sensitive to the values of their peer group, it is important to stress, by word and example, our solidarity with one another as Catholics—in our families, in our parishes, and in our worldwide Church.
Jesus gave Seven Sacraments to the Church as signs of his love. The Seven Sacraments are grouped: Sacraments of Christian Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist); Sacraments of Healing (Penance and Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick); Sacraments at the Service of Communion (Holy Orders and Matrimony).
Discussion Topic:
We encourage you to engage with your child in a conversation about your reception of the sacraments. Share your memories. You can also share your memories of their Baptism and ask what they remember about other sacraments they have received. Ask your child what sacrament they are most excited to receive in the future.
