This is the year in which third graders are introduced to the concept of Church as a community, in the parish and around the world, and their role in it. As they grow in social awareness and skills, they are eager to join with others in liturgy, in prayer, in reading Scriptures, and in outreach to those in need.
Have your child think about the work performed by different people in their communities. Help them to understand these people are not just doing their jobs--they are responding to God's call by serving the rest of the community.
Activity #1:
Have the children work to complete a two-column chart. The first column should be titled "Community Workers," in the second column write the ways they serve. Some options could include: CCD Instructors, Music Ministry Leaders, Eucharistic Ministers, etc.
Activity #2:
Ask your child to draw a scene of people worshiping and participating in Mass. Have them include thought bubbles for several of the people in the drawing, and write positive thoughts those parishioners might be thinking.
Activity:
There are many ways we can particiapte in our Church. Share with your child a way that you have participated in Church. Ask your child how they think they could participate. Can they sing in the choir or read the Scriptures? Can they join a youth ministry or volunteer as a helper?
Social Distancing Challenge: Discuss how we can particpate in our Church or interact with our church family while we practice social distancing.
